Introduction

The soft sound of bird song caresses the air, telling a tale of sinuous laughter, times of love and joy, and times of sorrow and sadness, coming from deep within the fringes of a well-hidden location. Wandering farther and farther into the forest, a refreshing chill passes over you just as a set of rolling hills come into view, and even though they do not seem to go on forever, they appear to be odd... stately... well-tended, with their grasses trimmed nicely and small wildflowers blooming brightly. A clearing rises within a section of the hills, with one very large landmark; a giant stump of what appears to be a Great Tree. All around this stump are several figures, bedecked in their finest clothing, standing taller than the tallest man ever known to live within this world, or so the stories say. Tufted ears move back and forth, listening to the things about them, the words being spoken, as one elderly figure stands within the center of the stump, leading the group in song?

This is the first impression made of the Ogier, should one just happen to come wandering into the Stedding, and have the opportunity to view a part of their peaceful lifestyle first-hand. Formal greetings are exchanged, welcoming the newcomer despite the uneasy feelings it brings to these fantastical, humanoid legends. Aside from the hasty, short-lived humans that take up most of the living space surrounding them, the Ogier are the only creatures known to exist naturally upon this world. Other creatures are constructs made of the One Power by the Aes Sedai from the Age of Legends, or channelers who decided to experiment and consider themselves closest to the Creator or Dark One, bringing different legends or horrors to the world. The Ogier remember those such people, and the times of happiness or horror that came with it, friends made and friends slaughtered.

Despite the fact that today, Ogier are considered to be peaceful beings, it was not always that way. They were quick to act and quick on their feet, considered some of the fiercest warriors during the Trolloc Wars, and a foe that was best left alone lest the legendary anger of an Ogier overwhelm them. It was only after the Breaking, and the periods of unrest that followed it, that the Ogier settled into their peaceful, quiet ways, creating the pact, rediscovering their stedding, and retreating from all that the world was and all that the world has become, to stave off the Longing, which had overtaken them during the times of bloodshed and warfare. They became scholars, caretakers of history and the old ways, and stonemasons when their history lessons were not enough. They remain hidden away, still considered legends by quite a few, but clearly not all. Stories tell of Ogier traveling the lands to record the present as they had the past. Stories tell of Ogier who are caught in a bout of fitful unrest, unable to keep to the ways of peace that have been established long ago. And lastly, but certainly not the end of the list, stories tell of Ogier who have been known to pop up in one location of the world, only to arrive in another several days later, as if time did not exist, often times bringing others with them... they tell of travel through the Ways, though beginning to fail, and of the stories of horror starting to surround them... and here, our tale of the Ogier begins to unravel as we get to see the culture in a more in-depth outlook.
